Heart-Healthy Diet Tips for Dogs and Cats

Our pets deserve to live long and healthy lives, and just like us, a nutritious diet plays a vital role in their well-being. Since this is especially true for heart health, we at Coast to Coast Cardiology are here to explain what a well-balanced diet looks like for all dogs and cats. In this article, we’ll also explore other considerations, including foods you should avoid feeding your pet.

Understanding a Heart-Healthy Diet

A heart-healthy diet for pets focuses on providing essential nutrients that can support optimal cardiovascular function.

Lean Protein: Protein is crucial for building and maintaining strong muscles, including the heart muscle. Lean protein sources like chicken, fish, and turkey are ideal for both dogs and cats.

Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may improve blood flow. Salmon, sardines, flaxseed, and fish oil are excellent sources of Omega-3s for your pet.

Fiber: Fiber helps regulate digestion and can indirectly contribute to heart health by managing cholesterol levels. For dogs, pumpkin and sweet potato are good sources of fiber. Cats can benefit from incorporating psyllium husk into their diet, but consult a trusted veterinarian for proper dosage.

L-carnitine: This amino acid plays a role in energy production within heart cells. It’s naturally present in animal-based proteins, but some commercially available pet foods may also be fortified with L-carnitine.

Taurine: An essential amino acid for cats, taurine is vital for heart health and vision. Cat food specifically formulated for feline needs will include taurine.

Dietary Considerations for Different Needs

Aspets age, their metabolisms slow down, and they may be less active. That’s why senior pets need low-calorie, nutrient-rich diets to reduce the risk of heart disease and obesity (a heart disease risk factor).

Consult your veterinarian for weight management plans if needed. For pets with existing heart conditions, a specific therapeutic diet may be recommended.

Foods to Avoid for a Healthy Heart

We’ve all been there: taking something out of our dog’s mouth that they shouldn’t be eating. Here are some foods that are potentially dangerous to our pets.

Salty Foods: Excess sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which can strain the heart. Avoid processed foods, table scraps, and excessive amounts of treats containing salt.

Fatty Meats and Processed Meats:  Fatty cuts of meat and processed meats like hot dogs and sausages are high in unhealthy fats and sodium. Choose lean protein sources instead.

Chocolate and Caffeine: These contain methylxanthines, which can cause heart arrhythmias, tremors, seizures, and other heart complications.

Onions, Garlic, and Leeks: These vegetables contain N-propyl disulfide, which can damage red blood cells in both cats and dogs.
